Woven baskets made of split oak are a staple of Central Appalachia, both as a form of art and as a functional-yet-elegant container.
In this one-day course, participants will go through the process of creating split oak baskets from start to finish. You’ll learn to:
- Identify white oak trees and select good candidates for basketry based on their grain, size, etc.
- Safely fell trees using hand tools or a household chainsaw
- Properly split the tree trunk to preserve the strands
- “Rhet” the splits
- Weave the baskets using a variety of patterns
